Home is not a place; it’s a feeling we create!

Home. It seems like a simple term that’s typically defined as a physical place or space where a person sleeps, eats, relaxes – and feels safe.

At ACCOMMOD8U, we recognize that the definition of ‘home’ is changing. It’s no longer a permanent house on a large plot of land, where we have to tend to lawns, clean gutters, or maintain roofs.

Today, human beings are far more mobile than ever before. Unlike previous generations, rather than settling down permanently in a ‘forever home’, we are moving across the world in search of new opportunities, across countries and cities in search of new jobs and passions. Today, we are moving upwards too, into homes that are in high-rise buildings that provide majestic views of cityscapes our ancestors could have only imagined in their wildest dreams.

Today, home is a feeling of security, fun, comfort, and being-in-the-moment.

How can we create this feeling? It can be very difficult, after travelling across the world or country, to feel comfortable in a new home. Many young professionals and students have left behind families, friends, loved ones, and habitual comforts, to arrive in Waterloo feeling uncertain, nervous about the future – and even isolated, lonely, or uncertain of what’s to come.

Have no fear. Big changes can be difficult, but there are ways to establish roots in your new home, develop new habits, friends, hobbies, and passions, and grow a powerful new sense of community.

  1. Ask yourself how you’re doing! Are you feeling excited for the future, and ready to take on new challenges? Or, are you feeling somewhat tired, isolated, or depressed? Relocation depression can be a normal feeling for a massive geographical shift in your life, so if it is interfering with eating, sleeping, or the enjoyment of your new home, then seek help from designated professionals eager to help you lift your spirits.

  1. If you are planning a move, then start preparing yourself before you pack your bags! Research your new home, such as the neighbourhood restaurants, parks, amenities, and volunteer organizations. Start reading the local paper of your new home online, and take a stroll around your neighbourhood using tools like ‘google maps’ to check the lay of the land. Ask friends, colleagues, or your future employers or professors for advice on how to settle in. And most of all, inquire with ACCOMMOD8U staff to hear their best suggestions on how to prepare for your arrival.

  1. Get involved! In a world of social media and digital communication, it can be tough to meet new people out in the world. Reach out to local volunteer groups, cultural groups, church groups, or hobby groups, to connect with others that share your interests and passions. This will not only allow you to grow and expand your interests, but it will connect you with new friends and neighbours.

  1. Exercise! Do you run? Lift weights? Play a sport? Join a local community team or club to get some exercise, improve mental health, and meet new neighbours. Even if you don’t play a sport, there are walking clubs and groups focused on non-intensive physical activities that always love new members. The point is to meet people while being active, and to have fun while settling into your home.

  1. Decorate! ‘Home’ is not only a place to sleep, it’s a place to express yourself and your personality. Try shopping for great deals at local thrift stores, yard sales, or online marketplaces, and for the very bold – join a local painting class or club to create your own masterpiece to adorn your walls. This is not only a fun activity, but a great way to help your new home feel authentically ‘you!’

  1. Smile! Don’t hesitate to smile and speak to your neighbours, in hallways or on the elevator, about how they like living at ACCOMMOD8U. Do they have any suggestions for a great restaurant? Are they studying or working here in Waterloo? What do they like about the area? Asking questions to neighbours not only helps you learn about your home and the area, but it creates bonds and friendships that help turn buildings of people into communities of friends.

Everyone’s journey to Waterloo is different, and everyone occupies a unique place and space in the world. Remember that your home at ACCOMMOD8U is more than just walls and a safe place to sleep; it’s a fully-functioning community that you can embrace and celebrate, to get the most of Waterloo region and all of its perks. Have fun!
